Welcome to AudioMurphy.com - World War II Oral History Audiobooks by Aaron ElsonAaron started interviewing WWII veterans more than two decades ago when he attended a reunion of his father's tank battalion. Since then, he has gathered over 600 hours of their stories and presents them here in the veterans' own voices. These are the stories that documentaries leave on the cutting room floor, that authors can't fit into popular histories. They are stories about courage and fear, about food and drink, about life and death and love and loss, about wounds and tonsillectomies, about General Patton and general confusion.
these are the stories that introduce the greatest generation to the latest generation...
The 712th Tank Battalion was on the front lines from Normandy to Czechoslovakia. During 11 months of combat, most of them with General George S. Patton's 3rd Army, the battalion became known as the "Armored Fist" of the 90th Infantry Division. This is the latest collection of stories told to Aaron Elson by veterans of the battalion.
These are the veterans you'll meet in "More Tanker Tapes," another set of interviews with veterans of the 712th Tank Battalion:
Dan Diel lost a tank, his driver was killed and he was wounded during his first day in combat, July 3, 1944. He returned during the Battle of the Bulge and eventually received a battlefield commission.
Paul Wannemacher and Orlando Brigano joined the battalion in Normandy as two of its first replacements.
Jule Braatz was a sergeant with a reputation for losing lieutenants, including Elson's father, who was wounded. Braatz became the first of 14 noncoms in the 712th to earn a battlefield commission.
Russell Loop, a farmer from Indianola, Illinois, was a gunner in the 712th. He was wounded three times.
Clifford Merrill, a company commander, served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam and retired as a full colonel.
Tony D'Arpino, a tank driver, had three tanks knocked out from under him. He was one of six drivers in C Company to go from Normandy to Czechoslovakia without being wounded.
